Dubs patting themselves on the back. Just what we need. Still, I DO hope this trend continues. It sure seems like we don't understand enough about blood. I had a friend who needed a bone-marrow transplant and the research we did really seemed to indicate there are all kinds of factors in blood that interact in ways that scientists just don't understand yet (at least not fully)

What was your Favourite/Worse time and day to go in the Field Service?
by JH ini never went out in the field service on the week-ends.
i did't want to meet too many people afterall !!!.
so, i went out in the field service only during the week, and only in the morning, knowing that not many would answer, because people were either at school, or at work.

Yeah, "break" after about two doors was great. I'm also with Merfi, nothing like hitting the rurals with a few friends. We spent most of the time playing cards in the car and we always quit early and rounded up ;-)

If you look at the above page, there's a pretty damn funny illustration of Charley in a Santa Suit. Not a picture, but worth a chuckle.

Religious extremism strikes again (and again)
by Breakfast at Cranberrys ini was just reading the time magazine cover story on opus dei, the ultra-conservative catholic group that gets the "bad guy" treatment in the da vinci code.
seems they deserve it.
i thought this sidebar about a former member would be something any ex- (or current) witness could identify with:dubro eventually grew frustrated with the assumption that questioning the organization was the same as questioning god's will and that leaving opus would result in eternal damnation.

I was just reading the Time magazine cover story on Opus Dei, the ultra-conservative Catholic group that gets the "bad guy" treatment in the Da Vinci Code. Seems they deserve it. I thought this sidebar about a former member would be something any ex- (or current) witness could identify with:
Dubro eventually grew frustrated with the assumption that questioning the organization was the same as questioning God's will and that leaving Opus would result in eternal damnation. He says he felt constantly pressured to recruit new members. He began to speak openly about his grievances and within a couple of years was asked to move out of the center. He left the group in 1987. "There is no ability to complain," he says. "It's absolute control, absolute obedience."
Sidebar: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1184045,00.html
Main Story (sorry, you'll have to be subscriber for the main story, but some of the sidebars are free): http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1184078,00.html
I have a perverse need to know rational people get completely duped by religious extremism. Makes me feel a bit less stoopid.

Dan Sydlik dies, the last of the moderating forces.
by SadElder inour good friend dan sydlik died today about 2 pm eastern time.
he was the last of the moderating forces on the gb.
lately he has had little influence among the ted (aka the boss) jaracz (head of the bethel cia - the service department) henchmen and loyalists.

I'm no fan of Sydlik. But I do believe he was as big a sucker as the rest of us. Just another follower of followers. Besides, I counseled more than a few people on the blood issue in my life. I brought a few people into the troof. While I didn't have nearly the authority or responsibility of a GB, my hands are too dirty to cast stones. He's dead and that's that.
And to XBEHERE: yep, I'm an ex-bethelite too. I remember seeing Sydlik one night on Columbia Heights while Monday study was going on. In other words, we were both skipping! Heh. I thought it was pretty damn funny at the time.

Remember??? "It's good to be alive and to serve the only true and living God Jehovah" ????
One of the few things I still remember vividly from my days at Bethel. He may have been misguided, but I have to admit that memory puts a smile on my face. Sorry to hear of his death.

Breakfast at Cranberrys
Wow, sorry I haven't posted in a while. Even if I am a newbie. ;-)
Brady, TX -- 75-79. OK, so I was only 4. But I'm sure my folks took me to every damn meeting. They were special pioneers.
Weatherford, TX -- 80-88 (Robert K, you've got a PM ;-) 5 yo to 13 yo or so. Great memories, actually. Probably cause I was a kid without a worry in the world.
Arlington, TX -- 88-95 -- Lake/Rush Creek Congo's -- 13 yo to 19 yo or so. Mostly Lake congregation. It was a bit confusing when we first moved there. They were redrawing the lines and we were moving around a bit. Arlington was a decent place to be a teen, even if I was a total "spiritual nerd." Gave my first public talk here (half of one. split it with an elder in the congo)
Jamaica, Queens (NY) -- 95-99ish -- 19-24 yo. Hillside congo. Nice folks, got WAY more respect than I deserved, mostly because I was a Bethelite. Sheesh, talk about a spoiled brat. But New York was great! I drove the only car for the Bethel boys and I loved driving the BQE to the LIE to Grand Central. Had a beat up old Taurus and I loved jockeying with the cabbies.
Verona, NJ -- 99ish - 01 -- 24 to 26 yo. Longer drive, nicer neighborhoods, even MORE spoiled. Spent a few weekends out there to escape Bethel, but faith was all but gone after six years at "HQ." Left Bethel in summer, watched 9/11 happen on TV. Knew one guy who died (nice brother from Jamiaca congo. Left a wife and two kids behind. Sad stuff.)
Arlington, TX -- 01 sporatically. 26 yo. Couldn't get into it. Tired of lying to people and saying Bethel was "great!" Just didn't buy the BS anymore. Franz books sealed the deal.
02 -- DA'd, DF'd. Gone. Buh-bye family, lifetime of friends. Picked up pieces, moved to Virginia, started over. Not as bad as it sounds. (Really. ;-)
